I know, I know, spring doesn’t officially start until March 20, but as far as I can tell, it’s here. As proof, the first day of March started with about an inch of fresh snow on the ground, which melted shortly, and by afternoon warm sunshine seemed only to encourage the birds to squawk louder.
With highs in the upper 50s and lows above freezing for the foreseeable future, I am finally seeing the light at the end of this unusually snowy late winter. As if to show its resistance to the new season, pesky snow still lurks here and there, but the wheat is green again (the horses’ excitement may rival my own on this one) and the creek and pond are nearing their banks. It’s easy to be optimistic about the grazing season this time of year. It’s good to be a ranch wife -- at least until the snakes come out.
