It snowed. Clearly Mother Nature reads Working Ranch blogs and saw we were in need of moisture when I mentioned it awhile back, because last week we got a nice snow then it snowed again this week, and now we have another chance on Monday.
Snow out here on the high plains can be a blessing or a curse. It rarely snows here without 30-plus m.p.h. winds which means blowing snow and blizzard conditions. We have some of our neighbor’s little heifers turned out because he didn’t have enough wheat pasture so we spent the day before the storm helping him set up a windbreak and put some bales out in the southwest corner of the pasture.
When it snows and blows here, cattle, especially calves, turn away from the wind and start drifting. If they are in a good fence, they often pile up and die, if they are on a not-so-good-fence, or hot wire, they will go through it and end up in the next county. So we took some precautions.
The morning it started snowing, we were able to find the heifers before the wind got up. They were drifting around so we drove them to
the corner. Having done all we could, we prayed for the best.
The next day, we checked the heifers; thank God they were fine. Most were headed to water, so we broke ice and took some time to have a little fun in the snow. It turned out to be a blessing.
